IRC's History

The Island Rock Crawlers Society was incorporated under the Societies Act in 1996 by approximately 10 four-wheeling enthusiasts. Since that time, the number of club members has fluctuated - its current roster is approximately 25 members, located in the south-island, mid-island, and even the lower mainland areas. Membership is varied, ranging from high-school students, to professionals in various vocations including law enforcement, civil servants, and retirees. The demographics of the society have remained relatively constant, with approximately 20 percent of the members being female.

Members of the society participate in and volunteer for fire watches, fire fighting, and search and rescue. The society is also registered with the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP); because of our vehicles, members of the IRC are in a unique position to offer assistance to such organizations. The society is also becoming increasingly active in participating in environment-oriented forums and discussion groups.

Since the formation of the society, many events have been organized, including:

  • annual "clean-up" runs to help keep wilderness areas free of household and other garbage
  • trail jamborees to promote safe, organized four-wheeling both to the public and to individuals owning four-wheel-drive vehicles
  • "play days" with the Big Brothers and Sisters organization
  • a first aid course for its members to volunteer for various emergency organizations
  • various seminars to promote and teach safety

The IRC has also adopted the "Observe, Record & Report" program with great success. Four reports of individuals dumping garbage illegally have been reported on various occasions, resulting in these individuals being fined through the CRD garbage bylaws.
