Special Rock Crawl ’99 Edition!

After a tonne of planning, the big event is HERE! The Island Rock Crawlers extend a hearty welcome to all participants, sponsors, club members, volunteers and visitors. We hope to demonstrate this long weekend what four wheeling is all about: tough trails, tough trucks, good times, and responsible ‘wheeling. We’re sure that you’ll enjoy your stay in Sooke. This area has a lot to offer: friendly people, beautiful scenery, and of course, world class trails. Our club president, Rick Reimer has a special message:

Keep the Rubber Side Down!

Spring Trail Clean-up

To help celebrate Earth Week, on Sunday April 17, IRC held its annual clean-up of Harbourview Road and the surrounding area. To all the people who participated, a BIG Thank-you! At least six abandoned vehicles were hauled out of the bush, along with over 500 cubic feet of other miscellaneous trash. The club wish to thank the following businesses and clubs that helped make this possible.
  • Sooke Disposal (bin and dumping fees)
  • Morningside Four Wheel Drive Club (extra hands, lots of equipment)
  • Western Foods, Sooke (participants provisions)
  • Western Region Rentals, Langford (equipment)

10 Stupid Things

Ten Stupid Things people do to mess up their four wheel drive (you know, like Dr. Laura Schlessinger)

  1. steering at standstill (power steering is a wonderful tool to break tie rods etc.)
  2. using too much speed or rpm (many times, faster than too slow is too fast)
  3. using a clutch the same way one would on pavement
  4. ignoring wheel cheat (tires are good friends—treat them well)
  5. following one’s gut feeling (most likely it’ll be wrong)
  6. straddling obstructions
  7. rushing through water
  8. keeping thumbs in steering wheel
  9. leaving cell phone at home
  10. using 4WD after you got stuck

Summer Club Activities

Because Spencer school is closed for the summer, the July and August meetings will be held at a location to be announced. A new meeting location may be found starting in September. There will be the annual Pig Roast at Al Vandervelde’s - details and costs will be announced at a later meeting. An informal barbeque will be held at Rob and Andrea’s, with the intention of introducing all the kids and spouses. On July 25, we will host the Big and Little Brothers/Sisters excursion to Shields Lake. We’ve committed to taking 15 participants.

Basic Rules Of Winching

We have included this article again this month because we expect a lot of winching to be taking place at Rock Crawl ‘99! Play it safe!

A L W A Y S

  • wear leather gloves when handling winch cable
  • keep hands well away from the cable going into the fairlead
  • double-check all attaching devices and prints for secure fastening
  • keep spectators at least 50 feet away from the winching area
  • place a heavy blanket, jacket, tarp or floor mat over the winch cable, about midway between the winch and the cable’s attachment point
  • make sure attaching points are atrong enough to handle the strain
  • winch in intervals sharter than 30 seconds to keep the motor from overheating
  • check the cable for frays, kinks, or other damage before winching
  • stand behind the door or sit in the vehicle when operating the winch
  • pull out the cable by hand, whenever possible, to save the winch motor and battery power
  • inspect the winch cable regularly when winching

N E V E R

  • stand beside a winch when it’s operating, or in a direct line with the cable
  • step over a winch cable that is under load
  • use a tow ball as an attaching point for the winch cable
  • start winching with fewer than three wraps on the drum layer
  • continue winching if the winch motor starts to smoke
  • use frayed or otherwise damaged nylon straps
  • hook the winch cable back onto itself
  • attach the winch cable, chain, or straps to steering components
  • allow the winch cable to pile up on one end of the drum while winching
  • stand or walk behind a vehicle being winched uphill
  • use a vehicle winch for hoisting
  • winch to a tree without taking care to protect it from damage
Website Committee

The Web Site Committee has been busy working on the new look for the IRC web pages. Due to the planning and preparations for Rock Crawl ’99, the new stuff won’t be ready until some time after the event. The site will feature a new style, layout, colour scheme and updated members’ pictures. We will also be showcasing some dazzling new technology (Flash - Shockwave). The committee consists of Rob Bryce, Rob McFadyen (Parts Bin), Dave Podmoroff (Flash design), Larry Soo (members’ pages), John Barron, Wyatt Sabourin (events) and Rob deLange.

If you have any new info about yourself or your truck to include, please send it to any of these committee members, or the club’s email address: irc@can4x4.com Help us keep the pages up-to-date!
