Here is an excerpt from the Lake Cowichan Gazette (Letters to the Editor), published following the May 6th 2000 clean up organized by Wilderness Watch and the Valley Fish & Game Club in Lake Cowichan, British Columbia.

“Those guys” from out of town deserve a little praise.

Seems like every time I turn around I hear about "those guys".

They are either about to be our economic saviour - the tourists randomly spending money everywhere - or our bane - ruffians here to start a fight, steal, or generally disrupt the quality of life.

On Saturday morning, some of the local guys met with some of "those guys from out of town". Both groups came to help with a local mess. They brought trucks, winches, gloves and very able bodies to tackle the task at hand - cleaning up illegal dump sites.

Men and women slid down one refuse choked ravine after another with garbage bags in their back pockets. They filled those bags with local garbage and heaved the bags to the next person on the slope and so on up to the trucks. Trucks then transported the garbage to the open, local legal dump site.

It was a messy job and a very rewarding one as well.

Thanks for coming and bringing those invaluable winches - how else would we have retrieved the washing machines and fridges that locals tossed over the edge?

A very special thank you to "you guys", the Vancouver Island Rock Crawlers, a hard working 4x4 club who want to keep the back roads open, clean and enjoyable for everyone.

Illegal dumping has increased dramatically and there needs to be a viable and speedy solution.

When groups from out of town see the need to help in cleaning up a valuable resource (our chose place of residence) perhaps it is time the CVRD and Town will make the necessary changes to increase access to legal dumping - for the well-being of everyone and everything.

Betty Worthy, Lake Cowichan

Thanks Betty, it's always good to receive recognition for a job well done!
